Read the design before the numbers: both arms got idebenone, at 0.5 and 1 percent, and there was no vehicle arm, so nothing here is measured against the lotion base or against six weeks of simply moisturising. The formulations tested were the commercial products. Twenty years on, a 2025 review still lists that trial as the only human skin study there is. Contact dermatitis is reported.

What is known, and what is missing
Measured on: roughness and fine lines on photodamaged skin (profilometry and investigator grading).
What is known: one trial, 41 women aged 30-65, twice daily for six weeks, with blinded grader assessments at baseline, three weeks and six weeks - so interim data do exist - reporting roughness down 23-26%, fine lines down 27-29%, hydration up 37% and biopsy evidence of higher collagen I. What is missing is the comparator. The paper calls itself a nonvehicle control study: both arms received idebenone, at 0.5% and 1.0% in otherwise identical lotion bases, so every number times a moisturising routine plus idebenone and none of it can be read as idebenone's own onset. The only other human exposures are a retrospective meta-analysis in which 16-20 volunteers used 1% idebenone on forearms with pre/post biopsies and no control, and sponsor-run trials that use idebenone as an active comparator against a herbal product. A 2025 review still treats the 2005 trial as the human skin evidence base. A bucket here would credit the lotion's work to the active.
