Carnosine
On your shelf ✓What Carnosine does for your skin, who it suits, and what to watch for.
INCI: Carnosine · Also: L-Carnosine, Beta-Alanyl-L-Histidine
In short: Carnosine delivers antioxidant and photoprotection support, suits most skin types, and the evidence behind it is limited.

Nice to have, and nothing to overthink.
Carnosine plays a quiet supporting role, rounding out a formula rather than being the reason you buy it.

What it does
- antioxidant
- photoprotection support
- anti aging
- barrier support
limited evidenceAn ex vivo human skin solar simulated radiation model using topical carnosine at 0.2 and 2 percent showed reduced reactive oxygen species advanced glycation end products and modulation of photoaging related gene expression and a rat UVB model with carnosine loaded carriers improved histology and antioxidant markers. A human irradiation study of a multi active formulation containing carnosine plus sunscreens and DNA repair enzymes reduced UV damage biomarkers but the carnosine contribution cannot be separated so clinical wrinkle or tone changes from carnosine alone have not been isolated.
On a label: usually effective at 0.2-2%.

What is known, and what is missing
Measured on: No vehicle controlled human trial has reported time to visible anti aging or tone outcomes for carnosine alone.
Existing topical carnosine data are ex vivo models with single solar simulated exposures animal UVB photoaging experiments and a human irradiation comparison of a multi active product so they measure biomarker changes rather than cosmetic endpoints in carnosine monotherapy making any timeline for clinical results uncertain.

Carnosine, answered
Is Carnosine safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Carnosine is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As with anything, if you are unsure it is worth a quick word with your doctor or midwife.
Who should avoid Carnosine?
No specific group is flagged to avoid Carnosine. It is well tolerated by most skin. Still, introduce anything new one product at a time.
What concentration of Carnosine actually works?
Carnosine tends to do its job in the 0.2 to 2% range. Much lower and it is likely underdosed.
