What is known, and what is missing

Measured on: barrier repair and soothing in dry, eczema-prone skin; no timed topical outcome.

Almost all clinical work on EPO is oral gamma-linolenic acid, including a 4-month randomised placebo-controlled study in mild atopic dermatitis with monthly TEWL measurement, and Cochrane concluded oral EPO is ineffective for eczema. The topical literature is thin: a 1999 German paper examined barrier function as a function of vehicle rather than establishing a use time course. No topical trial reports when hydration, TEWL or SCORAD change.

'Effect of Evening Primrose Oil on Korean Patients With Mild Atopic Dermatitis', Ann Dermatol 2018 (oral, 4 months); Gehring et al., Arzneimittelforschung 1999 (topical, vehicle-comparison). No qualifying topical time course.

2/5
Low

A linoleic-rich oil that rates around the middle.

  • This rating comes from old lab tests on the isolated ingredient, not the finished product.
  • The full formula, how much is used, and your own skin all matter more than one number.
  • If you are acne-prone it is worth noticing, not a reason to avoid it on sight.
