The Glow take

Nice to have, and nothing to overthink.

Retinyl Palmitate plays a quiet supporting role, rounding out a formula rather than being the reason you buy it.

What it does

  • anti aging
  • antioxidant support

moderate evidenceEx vivo and formulation data show that retinyl palmitate can stimulate collagen when used at several times the concentration of retinol, but clinical anti-aging data are more limited.

On a label: works best above 0.3%.

Retinyl palmitate does not increase sun sensitivity. In the one human test, skin treated with it before UV burned less, not more, roughly matching an SPF 20.

Antille et al., J Invest Dermatol 2003, human buttock UVB challenge; SCCS Opinion on Vitamin A (2016): no phototoxic, photo-irritant or photosensitising potential for retinyl palmitate

Nobody has published how long this takes to work.

What is known, and what is missing

Measured on: fine wrinkling / photoageing grading.

It must be hydrolysed to retinol then oxidised twice before anything retinoid happens, which is why this base says it needs several times the retinol concentration; the supporting work is ex vivo and formulation data rather than dated human endpoints. It does have one clean human timeline, but for a different outcome - a UVB-challenge study in which pre-applied retinyl palmitate blunted sunburn erythema at 24 h and thymine dimers at 2 h as well as an SPF 20 sunscreen, which is UV absorption by the film, not the anti-ageing claim it is sold on. The two trials that do grade photoageing cannot be used: one gave a blend of retinol, retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate against tretinoin 0.02% with no vehicle arm, the other a vitamin A palmitate plus antioxidant oil against an untreated group, whose 'improvements as quickly as 2 weeks' belongs to the whole oil rather than to this ester. No vehicle-controlled trial at cosmetic strength reports when wrinkles measurably changed.

Human photoprotection timeline (different outcome, deliberately not borrowed): Antille et al., J Invest Dermatol 2003, 'Vitamin A exerts a photoprotective action in skin by absorbing ultraviolet B radiation', PMID:14708621. Rejected for anti-ageing: Chien et al., JAMA Dermatol 2022, three-ester blend vs tretinoin 0.02%, 24 weeks, PMID:35675051; Rawlings et al., J Cosmet Dermatol 2013, vitamin A palmitate plus antioxidant oil vs no treatment, PMID:23438139. Plus the SCCS Vitamin A opinion, which times nothing.

Light, and how to keep it

Retinyl Palmitate breaks down in light. The packaging is doing real work: opaque, and closed between uses.

Photodecomposition measured directly, with photomutagenicity and photocytotoxicity of the decomposition products studied.

Retinyl Palmitate, answered

Is Retinyl Palmitate safe during pregnancy?

No. Retinyl Palmitate is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or trying, leave this one out and ask your doctor about a safe alternative.

Who should avoid Retinyl Palmitate?

Approach Retinyl Palmitate with care if any of these apply to you: pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What concentration of Retinyl Palmitate actually works?

Research tends to show Retinyl Palmitate starts pulling its weight above 0.3%. If a brand prints the percentage, that is the number to look for.

Does Retinyl Palmitate go off?

It breaks down in light, and that is the part that has been measured. Photodecomposition measured directly, with photomutagenicity and photocytotoxicity of the decomposition products studied. So the packaging is not decoration: opaque, and closed between uses. Heat, air and simple age matter too, and we have not sourced numbers for those, so treat this as one reason a product weakens rather than as a shelf life.

During pregnancy

Leave Retinyl Palmitate out while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It sits on the list of ingredients usually held back during this time.

When in doubt, check with your doctor or midwife. They outrank any website, including this one. When it is worth booking →

Commonly confused with

  • RetinolRetinyl palmitate is the gentlest, weakest retinoid; your skin converts it into retinol, so it does less and works more slowly.
