This one works on contact — there is nothing to wait for.
What that covers, and what it does not
Measured on: Corneometer stratum corneum hydration.
1,3-Propanediol is hygroscopic and acts at the skin surface by binding water in the stratum corneum, so the hydration reading moves on the first application rather than developing over visits; the bucket follows from that physics, not from a trial. No vehicle-controlled human study of propanediol alone reports a time course, and most published use is as a propylene-glycol replacement judged on tolerability and sensory grounds. Claims that it improves penetration of other actives are about the partner ingredient's timeline, not this one's.
Mechanism only; no single-ingredient human time-course study located.
Plays well with
- humectants
- emollients
Propanediol, answered
Is Propanediol safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Propanediol is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As with anything, if you are unsure it is worth a quick word with your doctor or midwife.
Who should avoid Propanediol?
No specific group is flagged to avoid Propanediol. It is well tolerated by most skin. Still, introduce anything new one product at a time.
What concentration of Propanediol actually works?
Propanediol tends to do its job in the 2 to 10% range. Much lower and it is likely underdosed.
