Free skin type quiz & routine builder
Your skin type, and the routine for it. Nine taps, about a minute, then a morning and evening routine with one pick per step, ready in My Shelf.
Question 1 of 9
How does your skin feel half an hour after washing?
How the skin type quiz works
Nine questions, one at a time, each with a reason. The first finds your skin type; the rest read what the type alone cannot (breakouts, marks that linger, how your skin reacts) and turn it into a skincare routine that fits you, not a generic one. The result shows each read with the answer it came from.
- How does your skin feel half an hour after washing?how your skin behaves on its own, the base of everything
- What matters most right now?what the one active in your routine should work on
- And roughly how old?pace and texture: prevention first, or firmness and richer creams
- Breakouts?whether the routine leans on pore-clearing actives
- When a spot, scratch or bite heals, does it leave a darker mark?whether marks linger: niacinamide and a high-SPF sunscreen matter more
- Does your skin react easily?how gentle every step needs to be
- Anything that limits what your skin can use?pregnancy, a prescription or a skin condition rule some actives out
- Ready for one active, or keep it simple?a simple foundation first, or one targeted active introduced slowly
- Makeup or a heavy sunscreen most days?whether your evening needs a first cleanse
The six Skin Personalities
The result names one of six, from your type, your goal and how your skin reacts. Each sets what the routine leans on.
The four skin types
Sensitive skin is a state rather than a fifth type: any of the four can sting or redden easily. The quiz asks about it on its own, and a reactive answer makes every step gentler.
How to tell your skin type without a quiz
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.
- Put nothing on: no toner, no moisturiser. Wait 30 minutes.
- Look in natural light. Tight or flaky: dry. Shiny T-zone only: combination. Shiny all over: oily. Comfortable: normal.
Oily does not mean skipping moisturiser: oil and water are different things, and skin left without moisture often makes more oil.
What the skincare routine builder gives you
- A morning and an evening, each step in the order it goes on: cleanse, treat, moisturise, and sunscreen last in the morning.
- One pick per step, the one that fits you best from our ingredient knowledge base, not from a brand's own range, with the reason it was chosen under it.
- One strong active at a time, introduced slowly, and left out entirely when pregnancy, a prescription or very reactive skin rules it out.
- Your routine in My Shelf: tap to open it, tick what you used each day, and the app plans your nights. Free, no account.

Why this quiz is different
Most skin quizzes belong to a brand and end in that brand's products. We sell no skincare. Every pick comes from the same scored ingredient base as our free tools, with the studies linked. A shop link says it is one, and a pick is never paid for. How we score.
Skin quiz questions, answered
What is my skin type?
Most faces are one of four types: dry (tight or flaky after washing), oily (shiny all over by midday), combination (a shiny T-zone with comfortable cheeks) or normal (comfortable most of the day). Sensitive skin is a state that can sit on top of any of them. The quiz above starts with how your skin feels half an hour after washing, the most reliable single clue.
How do I know my skin type without a quiz?
Wash with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, put nothing on, and wait 30 minutes in natural light. Tight or flaky means dry; shine on the forehead, nose and chin only means combination; shine everywhere means oily; comfortable all over means normal.
Is this skin type quiz really free?
Yes. The quiz, your result and your routine are free, with no signup and no email. The routine opens in My Shelf, also free, and stays on your phone.
How does the skincare routine builder choose products?
From your answers: skin type, goal, age, breakouts, the marks spots leave, sensitivity, anything that limits what your skin can use, and how ready you are for an active. Each step, morning and evening, gets the product that fits you best from our ingredient knowledge base: a light texture for oily skin, a richer one for dry, soothing ingredients if your skin reacts, niacinamide if marks linger. Price only breaks a tie. Under each pick, the result says why it was chosen. Shop links are affiliate links and say so; a pick is never paid for.
What order should my skincare routine go in?
Morning: cleanse, treat, moisturise, sunscreen last. Evening: take off makeup or sunscreen, cleanse, treat, moisturise. Thinnest to thickest, and one strong active a night. Your result shows your own steps in that order; the long version is in how to build a simple routine that works.
How accurate is a skin type quiz?
It is a good starting point, not a diagnosis. Skin changes with weather, age and what you put on it, so take the quiz again if your skin starts behaving differently. For a skin condition, see a dermatologist.
Can my skin type change?
Yes. Skin tends to run drier with age, oilier in heat and humidity, and can feel sensitive after harsh products. Your type is how your skin behaves now.
What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dry is a skin type: your skin makes less oil. Dehydrated is a state: your skin is short on water, and even oily skin can be dehydrated. The fix for dehydration is water-binding ingredients on slightly damp skin, not necessarily a heavier cream.
Why does the quiz ask about dark marks?
A darker mark that stays for weeks after a spot, a scratch or a bite is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and some skin makes it far more easily than others. If yours does, the routine adds niacinamide, prefers a high-SPF sunscreen and goes gently with acids, because irritation itself can leave a mark. Marks fade only out of the sun.
Is the routine safe in pregnancy?
One question asks whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are, the routine leaves out the actives that are best avoided. It is general education: check your routine with your doctor or midwife.
Once you know your type, keep going:
- Put your own bottles on My Shelf and see which ones fight.
- Browse the ingredient glossary, plain-English pages on what each ingredient does.
- Check whether two ingredients clash before you layer them.
