What it does

  • hydration
  • barrier support
  • anti inflammatory
  • photoprotection

moderate evidenceThe 2014 atopic dermatitis trial in Skin Pharmacol Physiol lists two of its four authors at bitop AG, the company that makes ectoine, and it compared the cream against another active cream rather than a vehicle. Capped at moderate for both reasons.

On a label: usually effective at 2-7%.

What is known, and what is missing

Measured on: Objective SCORAD and pruritus in mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis.

The one trial (65 patients, 28 days of twice-daily use, assessments at baseline, day 7 and day 28) is an intra-individual comparison against another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory cream and reports equivalence, not superiority over a vehicle, so nothing in it fixes when ectoine alone begins to work; two of its four authors work for the producer. The later paediatric device trial pairs 1% ectoine with 0.1% hyaluronic acid, confounding it again. What is known is mechanism - a zwitterionic osmolyte binding water at the surface - which is not a measured onset.

Ectoin, answered

Is Ectoin safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Ectoin is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As with anything, if you are unsure it is worth a quick word with your doctor or midwife.

Who should avoid Ectoin?

No specific group is flagged to avoid Ectoin. It is well tolerated by most skin. Still, introduce anything new one product at a time.

What concentration of Ectoin actually works?

Ectoin tends to do its job in the 2 to 7% range. Much lower and it is likely underdosed.
