What is known, and what is missing
  • Measured on: Objective SCORAD and pruritus in mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis.
  • The one trial (65 patients, 28 days of twice-daily use, assessments at baseline, day 7 and day 28) is an intra-individual comparison against another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory cream and reports equivalence, not superiority over a vehicle, so nothing in it fixes when ectoine alone begins to work; two of its four authors work for the producer.
  • The later paediatric device trial pairs 1% ectoine with 0.1% hyaluronic acid, confounding it again.
  • What is known is mechanism - a zwitterionic osmolyte binding water at the surface - which is not a measured onset.
