The Glow take
One of the ingredients I trust most.
When your goal is softening fine lines and keeping skin firm, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate delivers, though the proof is still catching up to the excitement. Skip it while you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and the rest of the time bring it in slowly.

Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate scores -1 on barrier support. It is one of only 8 ingredients in our glossary that go below zero there.
A negative score means it asks something of the barrier rather than giving something back, which is why it needs introducing slowly and pairing with ingredients that do support the barrier. It is not a reason to avoid it: the same evidence that shows the irritation also shows the long-term gains. See where it sits against all 388 of them →

Why we say this
- One 4-week single-blind split-face trial in 31 Chinese women with skincare-company co-authors found 0.03% of the 9-cis form matched or beat 0.3% retinol on wrinkles elasticity hydration dermal density and radiance with no irritation reported; there was no placebo arm and every other human study tests HPR inside a combination product so its own contribution is still unproven.
On a label: works best above 0.03%.

How much do you need?
Not established
No human trial pins a dose. The reasoning is below, and it is the honest answer.
Why we say this
- No vehicle-controlled human trial exists at any concentration.
- The only human study of the ester on its own is a single-blind split-face comparison inside a mouse photoaging paper: 0.03% hydroxypinacolone 9-cis retinoate for 4 weeks in 31 Chinese women, reported as matching or beating 0.3% retinol on wrinkles, elasticity and dermal density, with no vehicle side (Hu 2026).
- The other readings are mixtures: 0.1% with 1% retinol and 2% papain, open-label in 94 acne patients (Veraldi 2015); an Estee Lauder serum with peptides at an undisclosed level against a laser session in 42 women (Kruger 2025); a 5:9 blend with retinyl propionate in 42 women (Wang 2023).
- A trial against retinol can rank it but cannot set the dose at which it starts to work.

Where it fits in your routine
Nobody has measured whether Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate changes how your skin handles sun.
Why we say this
- No human UV-challenge data.
- The published human work is a four-week split-face trial measuring wrinkles, elasticity and hydration, plus mouse photoaging models.
- Inheriting the prescription retinoid caution is an assumption, not a measurement.
No HPR-specific photobiology located; J Invest Dermatol 2026 mouse photoaging model and a 31-woman split-face trial, neither with UV-sensitivity endpoints
Nobody has published how long this takes to work.
What is known, and what is missing
- Measured on: wrinkle score and dermal density (the anti-ageing job this base scores 8).
- The only human study of HPR on its own sits inside a paper that is otherwise a mouse photoaging model: a single-blind split-face trial in 31 Chinese women, 0.03% 9-cis hydroxypinacolone retinoate daily for four weeks, reported as matching or beating 0.3% retinol on wrinkles, elasticity, hydration, dermal density and radiance.
- There is no vehicle arm, so the active comparator can only rank HPR against retinol, not date when HPR alone first changes anything; four weeks is where the study stopped, not an onset; and the authors are affiliated with skincare companies.
- Every other human study puts HPR inside a multi-active product - with retinol glycospheres, salicylic and glycolic acid, niacinamide, papain, peptides or retinyl propionate - so its own contribution is unattributable.
- Retinol's timeline does not transfer: that would be an assumption about receptor binding, not a measurement.
Hu F et al., J Invest Dermatol 2026;146(8):2105-2127.e6, PMID:41644086 - the 31-woman four-week split-face trial is the human section of this mouse-model paper. Combination studies rejected: PMID:39394831, PMID:25876142, PMID:32869963, PMID:26889724, PMID:36762391, PMID:40029737. No vehicle-controlled trial of HPR alone located.

Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, answered
Is Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate safe during pregnancy?
No. Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or trying, leave this one out and ask your doctor about a safe alternative.
Who should avoid Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate?
Approach Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate with care if any of these apply to you: pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What concentration of Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate actually works?
Research tends to show Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate starts pulling its weight above 0.03%. If a brand prints the percentage, that is the number to look for.
Does Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate go off?
It breaks down in light, and that is the part that has been measured. Among the studied retinoids, the stability of the newer hydroxypinacolone retinoate was the most prominent. So the packaging is not decoration: opaque, and closed between uses. Heat, air and simple age matter too, and we have not sourced numbers for those, so treat this as one reason a product weakens rather than as a shelf life.
